There has been good feedback as to the customized courses where employees can see photos of their co-workers and other Vistar locations. Courses are assigned by job type each month. Risk and Safety Analysis

Vistar is a full-line food distribution company specializing in the areas of Italian, Pizza, Vending, Office Coffee, Concessions, Fundraising and Theater markets. The company currently employs approximately 800 truck drivers and has 35 distribution centers and numerous cash and carries located throughout the country. The company offers customers a wide variety of national brand name products, such as Hershey's, Entenmann's, Kelloggs/Keebler, General Mills, Snyders of Hanover and Sara Lee. Vistar also offers regional favorites and quality house brand products.

The Challenge

At Vistar, any driver accident is unacceptable and must be addressed. The company understands that unsafe acts will eventually lead to costly accidents and injuries. As a result, tracking unsafe acts by its drivers is critical, but often difficult. Historically, the company had included the Vistar website address on the back of each of its vehicles, but comments from concerned motorists were very infrequent.

Sandy Brownell, Vistar's Director of Risk and Loss Control, and her team realized that the only way to identify at-risk drivers and improve driving behavior was to implement an easy way for motorists to report road incidents and make drivers more accountable.

The Solution

Vistar had been a PureSafety customer since January 2001. After the PureSafety/Driver's Alert partnership was formed in April 2006, Bill Grana, PureSafety's CEO and President, called Vistar and explained the basics of the program. Driver's Alert sounded like it was worth pursuing and company representatives were invited to Vistar headquarters to give a presentation.

Sandy and her team were impressed with many features of the Driver's Alert program, including detailed driver reports, recorded customer calls and the ability to assign the appropriate driver safety training based on the driver infraction from within the Driver's Alert system. She was especially impressed with the Driver's Alert Money-Back Guarantee – “If you don't see a 10% reduction in at fault accidents, and/or a three-time ROI, the program is free.”

The Results

Within 30 days of signing the agreement, Vistar was able to implement the Driver's Alert program for all 800 drivers. Almost immediately, Vistar saw improvement in driver behavior. They found that drivers are less likely to take unnecessary risks when they know it is relatively easy for the motoring pubic to submit a comment through the Driver's Alert 1-800 number. Some of the many benefits Vistar has experienced include:

Documented Reduction in Accidents

Vistar has experienced over a 10% reduction in the frequency and severity of auto claims since launching the Driver's Alert solution. There has also been a reduction in accidents per million miles of almost 10%.

High Quality Recorded Customer Interviews
Conversations between the Driver's Alert customer service representative and the concerned motorist are always recorded. The Incident Report, including the recorded interview (as a .wav file), is automatically emailed to the Vistar corporate office and the driver's manager for immediate review. Consistent, documented information allows for a thorough investigation of the incident and fewer disputes.

Improved Ability to Pinpoint Problem Areas
Driver's Alert gives Vistar a way to identify repeat offenders and the driver safety area they most frequently violate, such as speeding or tailgating. Supervisors can then center their discussion around the specific problem areas when they meet with the driver. This also gives supervisors the opportunity to assign specific training or apply disciplinary action.

Automated Tracking and Reporting
The Driver's Alert system provides all necessary tracking and reporting relating to reported incidents and related training. Supervisors can immediately identify those drivers who need additional attention.

Instant Access to All Correspondence and Action Taken
The Driver's Alert system tracks correspondence between the supervisor and driver and any action taken. Management can pull up these reports anytime and monitor specific drivers or supervisors.

Ability to Share Positive Comments
Driver's Alert is not just a negative tool. Some motorists will call to report a Vistar driver who acted in a particularly courteous manner. Positive comments are always shared with the driver and his/her supervisor.
