Vanderbilt University and Vanderbilt University Medical Center comprise a comprehensive academic and medical research university in Nashville, Tennessee. The University comprises 10 schools, a public policy institute, a distinguished medical center and The Freedom Forum First Amendment Center. Vanderbilt offers undergraduate programs in the liberal arts and sciences, engineering, music, and education and human development, as well as a full range of graduate and professional degrees for over 10,000 students.
Vanderbilt University Medical Center is a comprehensive health care facility dedicated to patient care, research, and the education of health care professionals. Its reputation for excellence in each of these areas has made Vanderbilt a major patient referral center for the Mid-South. Each year, over 300,000 people choose Vanderbilt hospitals and clinics for their health care needs. Employing more than 17,500 faculty and staff, Vanderbilt is the largest private employer in Middle Tennessee and the second largest private employer based in the state.
The Challenge
Bob Wheaton, MPH, CIH, Director, Vanderbilt Environmental Health and Safety, required a web-based solution to provide safety training for the entire Vanderbilt community that integrated with PeopleSoft and student databases.
The Solution
Vanderbilt selected PureSafety primarily because of the high-quality, pre-existing safety training content, easy-to-navigate interface and willingness to customize based on Vanderbilt’s specific needs.
The Results
The current uses for VandySafe (the Vanderbilt University branded version of the PureSafety Learning Management System) include fire safety training for new freshmen and all residence hall advisors and JCAHO required annual re-training for Medical Center faculty and staff.
- VandySafe integrates with PeopleSoft and student databases, providing access to over 30,000 potential trainees and makes managing an ever-changing student, faculty and staff population easier.
- In the second year of the new freshmen requirement to take the “Vanderbilt Burning Issues” fire safety for residence halls safety module on VandySafe, participation has reached or exceeded last year’s participation. Nearly 100% of the Resident Advisors and over 50% of the freshmen class completed the training.
- The Medical Center’s annual Safety Fair for JCAHO compliance is now provided both in a live and an online format. The Safety Fair is presented over a one-week period twice a year, and provides annual re-training for required topics as mandated by JCAHO and OSHA.
- During the spring 2003 Safety Fair, 3,351 staff completed their training online as contrasted to the 2,527 staff that attended the live version of Safety Fair.
- Because the 2003/2004 fiscal year Safety Fair assignments are available for a longer time period, the staff is already responding well to the training.
- Due to the large number of individuals who are taking the training online, the Fall Safety Fair is being reduced in length by one day. The cost savings in man-hours and salary (just counting the staff that attended the live version of Safety Fair) prove the worth of the investment Vanderbilt has made in the PureSafety Learning Management System (LMS).
The Underlying Principle
The entire Vanderbilt community is now available for training through VandySafe. JCAHO and OSHA compliance training is more easily accessible and more convenient to the staff. More students are being trained on fire safety issues. Hard cost savings in salaries and improved productivity are being realized, while training and competency is increasing.
