"The improved EMF can clearly be attributed, to some degree, to the favorable effects of the PureSafety training program. I base that conclusion on the fact that PureSafety is essentially the only significant change to our safety program since March 1999."

In 1998, Thompson Machinery endured a tragic incident when one of its employees was killed in an on-the-job accident. Although the company had long been dedicated to maintaining a safety-conscious culture, management felt determined to do more. Additionally, the company sought a means to systematically track and report government and other corporate mandated training. As part of management's commitment to a company-wide safety initiative, Thompson Machinery began using the PureSafety solution in 1999. Since that time, Thompson Machinery has trained approximately 300 of its 450+ total employees in safe workplace practices using PureSafety.
Workers Compensation
Even with the 1998 fatality, Thompson Machinery's Experience Modification Factor (EMF) posted a steady decline due to a reduction in frequency and severity of claims and OSHA recordable incidents. Its current EMF is an impressive 0.56, its lowest ever. This number, significantly below the industry average, reflects Thompson Machinery's continued training efforts. According to Greg Simpson, Thompson Machinery's Director of Environmental Health and Safety, "The improved EMF can clearly be attributed, to some degree, to the favorable effects of the PureSafety training program. I base that conclusion on the fact that PureSafety is essentially the only significant change to our safety program since March 1999."
Workers Compensation Costs per Employee
Lost time and restricted work days result in lengthy work stoppages and lost production time. Thompson Machinery is seeing a reduction in these areas. Its total workers compensation costs per employee have been reduced substantially even with a growing employee population.
- Aside from its safest workplace in company history, the company enjoyed a 9% reduction in their 2001 workers compensation costs from the previous year.
- Lost work days have been reduced an average of 55% since 1999.
- Restricted (light duty) work days have declined an average of 40% since 1999.
Additional Benefits
In conjunction with the workers compensation outcomes, Thompson Machinery has also enjoyed the following benefits:
- Thompson now estimates that training attendance is very near 100%. Prior to implementation of PureSafety, that number was closer to 40-50%.
- With PureSafety, the corporate awareness of safety has been heightened.
- Safety training has positively affected other lines of insurance.
- Government mandated reporting and compliance requirements are documented and easily accessed.
- New hire training is consistent, cost effective and easily implemented.
- Travel costs and time for training personnel have been reduced.
- PureSafety's training solution answers problems, eliminates inefficiencies, and offers many benefits previously not achieved with traditional training methods.
The Results
Thompson Machinery's implementation of PureSafety has directly contributed to the realization of its lowest workers compensation EMF and also to an overall decrease in its workers compensation costs per employee. As a result of Thompson Machinery's use of PureSafety, the company has realized additional positive outcomes including heightened safety awareness, documented compliance reporting and cost effectiveness. The ultimate return on investment for Thompson Machinery has been a continuous and positive effect on the company's financial well-being and the protection of the company's most valuable resource - its employees.
