Testimonial
"Because of the PureSafety solution, I am able to concentrate more fully on the hands-on technical training for our field employees. I can focus more on individual safety problems that arise, and customer issues instead of worrying about scheduling on-site training and traveling. By running the appropriate reports, I can ensure all our employees have completed their assigned OSHA training. PureSafety saves me a great deal of time and our organization a great deal of money."

Rohm and Haas Company makes specialty materials that enhance the performance of paints and coatings, computers and electronic devices, household goods, adhesives, personal care products and more. The Company has annual sales of approximately US$7 billion and more than 17,000 employees at more than 100 manufacturing, technical research and customer service sites in more than 27 countries.
Rohm and Haas Automotive Coatings (RHAC – Lansing, IL) a division of Rohm and Haas, has 350 employees engaged in the manufacture, sale and servicing of innovative coatings technologies for interior and exterior automotive plastics. Its customized coatings are designed not only to meet OEM specifications but also to provide our customers the processing and first run capability to compete in today's automotive market.
RHAC currently is training approximately 140 field employees using the PureSafety solution, including employees from sales, marketing, and technical service fields.
The Challenge
Geographically Dispersed Employees
RHAC’s motto is “Nothing is More Important than Safety,” and RHAC has long been dedicated to providing effective training to its employees. Prior to its use of PureSafety, RHAC used a wide variety of training tools, including VHS tapes, on-the-job training, and on-site train-the-trainer presentations. However, given the broad geographic dispersion of its 140 field employees, using these traditional tools led to fragmented training and inconsistent results.
Updated Training & Tracking Materials
While video tapes worked well for the delivery of OSHA training, the organization realized that it was difficult to track the training that was being completed. Therefore, RHAC not only needed a more efficient way to deliver the critical OSHA training, but also required a mechanism to track it.
Employees Needed to Stay On-Site
RHAC needed a flexible training solution that would allow its field service technicians to train from any company site and allow them to spend more time working with customers. Prior to PureSafety, the field service employees would need to travel back and forth to the Lansing facility to receive their training. This always proved problematic because it meant time away from the customer, increased downtime and additional employee resources to cover their duties during training. The travel costs and time away from the customer became too costly.
The Solution
In order to provide a more efficient and cost effective method to deliver training to their field employees, RHAC implemented the PureSafety Enterprise solution in early 2002. The company delivers all of its OSHA required training to the employees using PureSafety. The company also offers additional training on a variety of topics including Static Electricity, Grounding/Bonding, and Safe Driving. These modules address many issues encountered by a field employee during a typical day of visiting customer sites.
The Results
RHAC’s Recordable Injury Rate has been steadily decreasing over the last three years and for Calendar Year 2004 reached 1.26. The PureSafety solution is an integral part of the blended approach that RHAC’s training and safety program contains. RHAC uses PureSafety’s online courses, complemented by on-the-job training that is tracked using the PureSafety Learning Management System (LMS). The company has seen numerous benefits from using PureSafety, including:
- Lower training costs by keeping employees on the job versus spending money on travel costs
- Decreased time for the technical trainer to focus on more important safety and technical issues
- Improved trainee flexibility by giving employees the ability to take training on their own time, on their own schedule, on-site or even at home
- Improved OSHA regulatory compliance through more timely and accurate training records.
