Giles & Ransome is a heavy equipment dealer located in the Northeast. The company has 405 employees and fourteen locations in Pennsylvania, Delaware and New Jersey.
The Challenge
Of the total number of trainees, Giles & Ransome has 140 field service technicians/mechanics working outside the office, making it difficult to provide training. Approximately 270 employees generate average revenue of $70 per hour for the company. As a result, the company was using Instructor Led Training (ILT) to train 75% of their employees. The other 25% received no training at all. The question was how could a safety conscious company train a higher percentage of its employees and still reduce costs?
The Solution
In September 2002, the company implemented the PureSafety Enterprise solution to begin training its workforce online.
The Results
- Since the launch of PureSafety, the percentage of employees being trained has increased from 75% to 100%.
- Instructor-led classroom training on safety and risk management reduced from 14 classes per month to 14 classes per year.
- In addition, Ransome's Risk Manager, Mike Barnasevitch, knows that trainees spend an average of 20 minutes of "wind up / wind down" time before and after each ILT session takes place. With 203 trainees (75% of 270) per month or 14 trainees per classroom session generating the $70 labor rate per trainee, the savings due to the elimination of "wind up / wind down" time is $51,975. This savings alone more than pays for the company's annual PureSafety contract.
- Since the implementation of PureSafety, their injury rate has steadily declined and that trend continues today. In 2005, Ransome experienced a 5% overall reduction in their injury rate compared to 2004 while the Engine Division experienced a 42% reduction in injuries.
ROI is usually calculated on a "soft-dollar" basis, but in this real world example, measuring the significant reduction in the number of ILT classes after implementing PureSafety's online training solution generates measurable savings in lost revenue from a reduction in non-productive downtime.
