Testimonial
"OHL has always believed in Safety and the benefits attributed to a solid Safety Program. As we diversify we needed to ensure our Safety message is clear, concise, and promoted consistently. The ability of PureSafety to adapt their products to our need is a clear benefit. Now, we can communicate to all associates our expectation to comply with regulatory mandates and document training consistently. PureSafety enabled our managers to designate responsibility and hold the management team accountable to a common goal, fewer accidents!"

Based in Nashville,Tennessee, Ozburn-Hessey Logistics (OHL) is the nation's largest privately held 3PL (Third Party Logistics), serving Fortune 1500 companies with strategically placed, multi-client warehouse campuses, as well as numerous dedicated facilities. The company serves the food service consolidation, industrial, electronic/high tech, pharmaceutical/medical, health and beauty, and consumer products industries. OHL provides services including fulfillment, e-commerce fulfillment, service parts management, return logistics, cross docking and pool distribution. The company currently employs 2,700 people operating in over 19 million square feet of warehouse space nationwide providing complete transportation management of parcel, LTL and TL shipments.
The Challenge
In-House Training with Outdated Material
Prior to PureSafety, OHL would deliver their safety training in-house by facilitating periodic “Safety Talks”. There were approximately six regulatory “Safety Talks” and four optional ones throughout a year, which was not enough training for an organization of that size. It also became difficult to get the most up-to-date training information and knowledge regarding the specific topics.
Rapid Growth
OHL currently employs 2,700 employees across 100 locations. Since 2003, the company has seen its employee counts grow by 40-50% annually, making it increasingly difficult to manage employee-training programs. Bottom line - the company needed a training solution that would allow them to efficiently and effectively manage a growing workforce.
Tracking Difficulty
Considering the number of employees and locations that OHL needed to manage, it became very challenging to keep track of the entire employee training information. The company's manual tracking system was inefficient and difficult to keep up to date.
Consistent Safety Message across Organization
Prior to PureSafety, it became difficult to keep OHL's safety message consistent. The company needed a system where the same safety training information was delivered to all employees at all locations, in an organized fashion.
The Solution
Train-the-Trainer
OHL partnered with PureSafety in 2004 and began using the Enterprise LMS in a “Train-the-Trainer” fashion. 36 key operations employees were identified within the company as “Committee Chairmen”. Each Committee Chairman is responsible for completing one course per month that gives them a basic understanding and knowledge of the safety topic. After completing the online courses and tests, the Committee Chairman is then responsible for delivering the training to various locations/employees. The resulting training information is then delivered through “Training Briefs” that PureSafety creates for each topic in the Ozburn-Hessey training library. Finally, the Committee Chairman facilitates a short quiz after completing the training course to make sure the trainee grasps the information being presented. After the training is delivered, the Committee Chairman marks his or her employees complete using PureSafety's offline (hands-on, classroom) training feature.
OHL delivers training once a month (except December and January) and topics include Hazard Communication, Lockout/Tagout, Bloodborne Pathogens and Hand, Wrist and Finger Safety.
The Results
Workers' Compensation Cost Reductions
Since using the PureSafety system, OHL has seen a significant drop in its workers' compensation costs. Since 2004 they have seen a 21% decrease the first year.
Direct Impact on Bottom Line
Since 2004, the organization's Experience Modification Factor (MOD) has gone below 1 (the average). Considering the rapid growth OHL has experienced, this MOD reduction has proven to be extremely beneficial regarding insurance premium reductions. Because OHL was able to generate current detailed documentation of safety training for their operations, the insurance underwriter is able to justify any premium credits that may be applied because the reports show that real information has been transferred to the trainee.
Positive Employee Feedback
Employee feedback has been extremely positive with the new training program in place. The Committee Chairmen enjoy the convenience and ease of use of the PureSafety solution.
Detailed and Timely Reporting
The reporting features in the PureSafety LMS have been extremely beneficial for the management team at OHL. All OHL training documents and employee information are in one place and available 24/7.
"With most new programs, there are unforeseen problems to deal with at startup. The responsiveness and "get it done" attitude from PureSafety held the problems to a minimum. It was not just the customer service people, but everyone I had contact with wanted to make sure that PureSafety was delivering what OHL expected."
