LCYCIC is a leading global thermoplastics elastomer manufacturer listed on the Taiwan Stock Exchange and has operations in Qatar, China, Taiwan, and the US. LCY Elastomers LP (LCY), located in Baytown, Texas, manufactures and markets styrenic block co-polymers products. It has a production capacity of 60,000 tons per annum and currently employs 84 people.
The Challenge
Scheduling Conflicts
At LCY, monthly safety meetings were held to address any regulatory compliance training. These meetings often proved to be problematic because it was challenging to get all employees (both shift and office) to attend. Scheduling conflicts were numerous and often the training did not get completed. It became increasingly difficult for the HSE Manager and Safety Superintendent to constantly reschedule and reorganize missed training for the employees. In addition, when the shift employees did in fact attend training, LCY was then required to pay them overtime. LCY needed a system where the employees could take training on their own time and schedule, without the need to pay overtime.
Delivering the "Right" Training to the "Right" Employee
The same safety training course had long been delivered to every employee – regardless of job function. As a result, many employees were not receiving training that pertained to their jobs. The company came to realize that some employees were spending time on training that did not benefit them, causing a productivity loss for the company. LCY needed a training solution where each employee could receive specific training that pertained to their job and duties.
Outdated Training Materials
Prior to implementing PureSafety, LCY's training consisted of PowerPoint presentations and video tapes. Often times the employees were receiving the same information on the topics each year, including tests. The material was outdated and LCY found that many of its employees were just "going through the motions" and not necessarily grasping or thinking about what they were learning. LCY needed updated programs that could be easily customized and changed over time.
Manual Tracking
After delivering training via PowerPoint or videos, the trainee would then be required to take a short quiz and turn in their paperwork. Each employee then had a “training file” which compiled all their training and attendance records. This manual tracking process was inefficient, created a large paper trail and left a lot of room for error. LCY needed a training solution that automatically tracked all training activity in one centralized database.
The Solution
LCY implemented PureSafety's Enterprise solution in March 2004. Today, approximately 65 employees access PureSafety to get their required safety training. Each employee takes at least one mandatory compliance training course a month, including Hazard Communication, Bloodborne Pathogens, RCRA and Storm Water Pollution Prevention.
The Results
Flexible Solution
Since implementing the PureSafety solution, the feedback has been extremely positive. Not only have the employees found PureSafety easy to use, they also enjoy its flexibility. Each employee can take their own training, on their own time and at their own pace. In addition, all the tests that the employees take can be customized. Often times the HSE Department will change test questions to make sure the trainee does not become complacent, which keeps the training material fresh.
Bookmarking
Because of the nature of their jobs, the shift employees at LCY tend to get called away for work projects and emergencies on a moment's notice. It has been extremely beneficial that the PureSafety system has a bookmarking feature that keeps the trainees place if they get called away from training. This way the trainee can log back into the system and their place in the course is saved.
Robust Tracking Tool
Now that all training records reside online, it makes it extremely efficient to pull data and run detailed reports. In addition, the various department managers along with the HSE Manager and Safety Superintendent have their PureSafety reports automatically emailed to them, saving them valuable time during the work day.
Communication Tool
LCY also utilizes the PureSafety LMS to upload and deliver important documents, policies and procedures for their employees. That way they can track and make sure each employee receives any critical information that needs to be conveyed.
Decreased Training Costs
Because LCY no longer requires monthly safety training meetings, the overtime charges for shift employees have been reduced. Approximately $30/per hour/per employee is saved each and every time a course is taken online.
