An innovative drug discovery and molecular biology research enterprise with 140 employees. More than 50 are highly educated scientists and bioengineers with M.D. and PhD. degrees.
The Challenge
The company’s EHS department was given the responsibility of developing compliance training programs for their site. The time to organize these programs was very limited because of the many other duties of the department. Initial programs utilized instructor-led training (ILT) using outside contractors. Trainees expect to be engaged in the learning and challenged intellectually. Due to the nature of their work, it is often not feasible to stop experiments to attend in-house training sessions. Furthermore, scientists conduct experiments that are time critical, making single training sessions difficult to attend. Therefore, several sessions were necessary to accommodate the schedules for the employees in order to complete a training course. This increased training costs, and even with this accommodation, not all employees were being trained.
As a result, the company needed to find a compliance-based training solution that:
- Offered high quality, engaging courseware for its team of scientists
- Gave them training flexibility
- Would save the company money
The Solution
In February 2003, the company began training their employees using PureSafety. The company’s organizational hierarchy was easily loaded into its custom PureSafety database. By 2004, most modules had been customized for the company’s operations and employees are currently being assigned training courses for the entire year, which they can complete during “down time in experimental protocols.”
The Results
- The initial time investment to properly implement and promote the availability of the company’s training programs has allowed the EHS department to focus on other job responsibilities.
- With limited resources of time and staff, EHS specialists check on the status of training from their computers and use the automatic reporting functions to keep management informed as to the status of their direct reports’ training. These monthly reports are sent out to supervisors and directors allowing consistent accounting of employees who are overdue in their training.
- Company Employees are saying that “the training sessions are fun.” Customized PureSafety training courses showcase company facilities and their employees, making the training more interesting. Additionally, the courses use photographs from company locations to point out specific safety issues at the facility.
- PureSafety’s Internet-based solution is flexible enough to accommodate everyone’s schedule. Employees train on their own time. They can complete segments of the training modules between experiments and are appreciative of not having to take a one hour training course in one sitting. Trainees that travel to conferences can complete their training requirements while on the road. This training fits into their individual work styles and timeframes.
The PureSafety solution has helped the company streamline its training and tracking efforts, ultimately allowing everyone to meet the training schedule. The EHS department has received positive feedback. Everyone is looking forward to taking their training again this year, and some even see an opportunity to complete their compliance training earlier and on their own schedule.
