Harvey Industries

The Company

Testimonial

"Before implementing Prognos, our injury and incident data was not gathered consistently or well-organized, which resulted in lower productivity and unnecessary inefficiencies. Implementing Prognos has allowed my department to simplify and streamline incident reporting and investigation, while reducing the amount of resources dedicated to these activities. Because 80% of our claims now reach our carrier in zero to three days, we’re better able to make critical compensability decisions, expedite return to work strategies, and improve the overall outcome of a claim. This has resulted in a significant disability cost reduction for the company. Furthermore, Prognos provides us with key reporting and measurement tools so we can evaluate results and measure performance on an ongoing basis."

Dave Conant
Risk Manager

Harvey Industries, headquartered in Waltham, Massachusetts, is a leading manufacturer of windows and doors, as well as, a premier wholesale distributor of quality building products in the Northeastern part of the United States. The company employs approximately 2,000 employees throughout New England, New York and Pennsylvania.

The Challenge

Some of Harvey Industries' challenges, as it relates to Risk Management, stem from what made them successful. While the company was extremely responsive to customers given its network of locations throughout the Northeast, paper driven safety and risk management practices were often inconsistent and inefficient. Dave Conant, Risk Manager at Harvey Industries, performed a needs assessment to identify key performance findings. His initial analysis identified weaknesses in internal processes that resulted in inconsistent information and poor investigations, high levels of lost time frequency rates, as well as poor lag time performance, resulting in high cost claim ratios and mean disability costs. All of this compounded itself with poor corrective actions and legal and regulatory issues.

The Solution

In order to better understand the company's situation relative to the competition, Mr. Conant commissioned an in-depth performance benchmarking study in 2002, which resulted in several key findings, including:
  • The company's disability costs and lost time frequency were twice that of its competitors ($533 per day and 1.07/$1MM payroll in 2002)
  • The company had significant reporting lag time with its insurance carriers (as many as 10+ days post incident)

After seeing the results of the needs assessment and benchmarking analysis, Harvey Industries' Chairman gave Mr. Conant the green light to find a software solution that, at a minimum, would provide the company with:

  • Centralized incident reporting and investigation tools
  • Improved corrective actions tools and response time
  • Improved reporting time with its carriers
  • Claims management capabilities
The Results

In 2002, Harvey Industries implemented PureSafety’s Prognos™ software, and almost immediately, the company was able to see results.

Resource Reduction & Productivity Improvement
Upon implementation, the company was able to reduce the resources managing its incident reporting and investigation process from four people to one person.

Claims Reporting Improvement
Since implementing Prognos™, 80% of Harvey Industries’ claims now reach their insurance carrier in zero to three days, allowing both the carrier and Harvey Industries to make critical compensability decisions, expedite return-to-work strategies, and improve the overall outcome of a claim.

Significant Disability Cost Reduction
Since implementing Prognos™, Harvey Industries has outperformed its industry group in several key areas including mean total disability cost/day, loss rates, and lost time frequency.
