Carrier Corporation is the world leader in providing heating, ventilating, air conditioning (HVAC) and refrigeration solutions. Carrier Commercial Service (CCS), a division of Carrier Corporation, employs over 2,100 people in more than 100 service offices located across the United States and Canada. CCS provides maintenance and analysis services of HVAC and control systems in commercial and industrial buildings. Environmental health and safety (EH&S) is a core value of Carrier and employee safety training is an ongoing focus for the company.

The Challenge

Training Materials
Prior to implementing PureSafety, CCS’s training was delivered through printed handouts and videos. These materials were sent via mail to the service managers who were then responsible for posting a sign-in-sheet prior to delivering the specific training in a classroom environment. It requires a rigorous process to ensure materials are kept up-to-date.

Manual Training Tracking Process
Prior to implementing PureSafety, all training that was being delivered was being tracked through sign-in sheets. CCS wanted a system that compiled all the training records in one centralized location.

Training/Travel Cost
With a large number of employees out in the field, it was costly to continually bring employees and the appropriate field trainer into a centralized location to complete their required training.

Consistent Safety Message Across Geographically Dispersed Locations
CCS wanted a consistent safety message across the organization. With so many employees and service technicians in numerous locations, it was critical that all employees were receiving the same safety message.

Non-English Speaking Employees
With some employees not speaking English as a first language, CCS needed a solution to deliver consistent safety training in the employees' native language that provided a real transfer of information.

The Solution

CCS implemented PureSafety’s Enterprise solution in 2001. Today, approximately 2,100 employees access PureSafety to get their required safety training. 60% of CCS employees take their training at home and on their own schedule. Each employee takes approximately 6 – 8 courses within a 45 day period during their non-peak season.

Since implementing PureSafety, Carrier has seen numerous benefits - both for the company and its employees:

Decreased Training Costs
Since implementing the PureSafety solution, CCS has seen a significant decrease in training costs. Because trainees only require access to a computer, which many have at home, CCS no longer needs to bring employees into a centralized location for training delivery.

Knowledge Retention and Accountability
Because CCS utilizes the PureSafety LMS, all the training records are in one centralized location. The PureSafety LMS requires each employee to take their training course and corresponding test which ensures accountability and knowledge retention.

Just-In-Time Training
Because CCS has the ability to modify PureSafety courses and add company-specific training materials, they can respond immediately to changes in their industry, environment and address specific training needs/topics. CCS can manipulate a course and assign it immediately, which not only provides the employees with imperative just-in-time training, but it also saves the organization money. CCS employees have provided positive feedback regarding the quality of the training materials and they appreciate the 24X7 flexibility to take the training when and where they want.

Consistent Safety Message Through Custom Development
Building brand awareness and a strong company culture is vital to the CCS organization. Therefore it was critical for all of CCS’s training to reflect the current company colors, key messages and branding. The CCS employees not only view specific custom training courses that are applicable to their job function, but they also receive a consistent safety message in their preferred language – either English or Spanish.
